Halloween History And Origins

Unless you are from Mars you would know that Halloween is an annual holiday that is observed throughout the entire United States of America on the 31st of October every year. It is a very popular festival and involves many fun filled activities like wearing costumes, bonfires, playing pranks on the neighbors, trick or treating, carving jack-o’-lanterns from pumpkins and many other such fun activities.

Halloween has in fact become a mainstream secular holiday and it combines the various elements of traditional harvest festivals from the forefathers and also very unique and peculiar traditions like the donning of scary costumes and scary disguises, trick or treat, and also spooky and scary decorations with some elements of the supernatural thrown in. Till the last few decades Halloween was primarily a festival and holiday for the children and the youngsters, however over the last few years with various activities like the donning of masks and scary costumes, themed parties and decorations, and even trick-or-treating it has become very popular with the grown-ups too, thus making it a festive event for both the young and the old and the entire family to enjoy Halloween together.

Historians debate over the origins of the Halloween festival but one thing that is agreed upon is that Halloween typically means “summer’s end”. Spiritually Halloween does not hold any significance when compared to other Christian festivals like Christmas or Thanksgiving but nevertheless it is a very popular festival in the United States.

In recent years Halloween has become most popular for what we call “Halloween costumes” i.e. people will dress up in scary costumes derived from horror and Gothic backgrounds like Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, Mummies, Werewolves, Vampires, etc. The traditional colors of Halloween are Orange and Black.

Trick or treating is a popular custom with young children at Halloween. Children will dress up in various costumes and go from house to house asking for treats such as candy or chocolates and will often pop the question “trick or treat”. Trick would mean a prank will be played on the house owners in the event a treat is not given. This practice of going from door to door and begging for food dates back to the middle ages when poor folk would go from door to door and receive food in return for prayers.

The season of Halloween is also popular for games and partying (Halloween parties). People will dress up in lavish and scary costumes often impersonating a famous movie character like someone from the Harry Potter movie series or the Twilight series, or even a superhero like Batman, Iron Man, Captain America, etc.
